On assignment for UNHCR

November 25, 2017

“[…]life is not a choice. It’s all about where you find yourself.” Proud to have met Emmanuel and his story. A positive glimpse of South Sudan. My latest for UNHCR text by the Helen Womack. To read the story please visit Track website.

Boboya Emmanuel Sebit Gabu, or Emmanuel, attends the biology lesson with his fellow students at the Adriatic College located in Duino, near Trieste. 'A human being is like a tree. When you are in bad enviroment, you narrow yourself and your thought but in a good place, you expand'. Emmanuel, 18, a refugee from South Sudan is now attending - thanks to a scholarship - the first semester of his first year at the Adriatic College. Adriatic College is one of 17 schools around the globe belonging to United World College (UWC). It is an organisation founded in 1962 with a mission to make education a force for peace bringing together students from all over the world. This year, with backing from UNHCR, UWC is aiming to increase from 30 to 100 the number of scholarships it gives to refugees.
